Trolley System Expanding

In an effort to expand service beyond the Central Business District, Greenlink will soon add two additional trolleys to its fleet. The expanded service is expected to begin this summer and will feature two new routes. Because a portion of the funding for the new trolleys will come from tourism-related taxes, the new proposed routes have been designed to provide access to restaurants, retail, parks and leisure activities. Greenlink will hold public input sessions in the coming weeks to give citizens an opportunity to learn more about the proposed routes, ask questions and provide feedback. GTA Receives National Grant to Increase Pedestrian Access

America Walks, a national advocacy organization that promotes walking and walkable communities, has awarded Greenville Transit Authority with a 2016 Every Body Walk! Micro Grant. In its second year, the micro grant program provides funds to support grassroots efforts aimed at getting communities walking and creating safe, accessible and enjoyable places to walk and be physically active. America Walks selected GTA, which received $3,000, from over 800 applicants.
“According to the Center for Disease Control, senior citizens and children are the most susceptible to pedestrian fatality accidents and research indicates that more than one-third of Greenville’s population falls into these categories,” said Nicole McAden, Greenlink’s Marketing and Program Specialist. "To better support them and all residents, Greenlink will use this grant to upgrade the infrastructure at an existing bus stop to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians accessing transit.”

Comprehensive Operational Analysis Kicks Off

Greenville Transit Authority has awarded the contract for Greenlink’s comprehensive operational analysis to Connetics Transportation Group (CTG) from Atlanta. Greenlink staff will meet with the CTG consultants this month to begin data collection and over the next 8-12 months, CTG will conduct surveys and focus groups to determine the following:

  1. Who are Greenlink’s current and potential riders and where do they live?
  2. Where do existing and potential riders wish to travel?
  3. Are the stops on current routes meeting the needs of a mass transit system?
  4. Can travel time be reduced along current routes?
  5. Are the current hours of operations in line with the ridership patterns of the current routes and stops?
  6. Are there routes that need to be reduced or enhanced?
  7. Is the current fleet of Greenlink vehicles effective?

Stay tuned for more information as the project progresses!

Greenlink Bus Stop

New Bus Stop Committee

Beginning this month, Greenlink will implement a new process for responding to requests to install new bus stops and shelters and relocate existing bus stops. The process is designed to simplify the permitting and installation procedures and create uniformity amongst all the different jurisdictions that Greenlink serves. To that end, we have established a new Bus Stop Committee made up of representatives from each municipality’s planning, engineering and public works departments. The Bus Stop Committee will be responsible for:

  • Reviewing and approving bus stop design guidelines
  • Reviewing and approving requests for stops and shelters
  • Working with the applicable municipality on encroachment permits and construction/installation
  • Prioritizing stops for ADA compliance retrofits
