While the Greenville Police Department recognizes that New Year’s Eve celebrations often involve alcohol, with nearly half of all fatal crashes in South Carolina involving an impaired driver, the department’s goal is to ensure that everyone has a great but safe time while celebrating the New Year. As a result, the Selective Enforcement Unit and other officers will be conducting DUI enforcement activities on New Year’s Eve and continuing into New Year’s Day.
DUI enforcement will be conducted to help identify drug and alcohol impaired drivers, including juveniles, young adults and older adults, before they are involved in a collision. Enforcement actions will not be narrowed to one specific location, instead will be a city-wide concentration. Having a designated driver is encouraged if you plan on consuming alcoholic beverages.
The Greenville Police Department is an active member of the SCLEN and participate in the “Sober or Slammer” Campaigns statewide. Members of the public are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings when walking and driving on New Year’s Eve, and to report impaired drivers by calling 911.
