The Greenville Police Department would like to remind motorists that traffic will be heavier on our
roadways during this holiday season. Remember not to block intersections in and around the city of Greenville, and allow yourself more time to make it safely to your destination.
The City of Greenville has posted Do Not Block Intersection signs on Woodruff Rd, from Roper Mtn. Rd. to Garlington Rd. Additionally, the Greenville Police Department will be enforcing aggressive driving and blocking intersection violations, especially throughout the holiday season. This enforcement activity is
designed to both reduce congestion and increase traffic and pedestrian safety.
When a motorist enters an intersection and is unable to travel all the way through, they prevent cross traffic movement and endanger other travelers by blocking crosswalks and bike lanes. Blocking an intersection is illegal and contributes to traffic congestion. Vehicles should not enter an intersection if they cannot get through the intersection within the allotted traffic signal time.
Tips To Avoid Blocking Intersections:
? Wait to enter an intersection until you can make it all the way through. In accordance with South
Carolina law, drivers who block intersections face a fine of up to $238 and a subsequent point
violation on their driver’s license (56-5-2735A).
? Wait behind the stop bar, not in the crosswalk, and look to see if the vehicles in front of you on the
other side of the intersection have left enough room for you to make it through without stopping in
the crosswalk on the other side.
? If you can’t clear an intersection, don’t enter it.
? When cross traffic cannot get through, neither can emergency vehicles. Also, blocking an
intersection can cause pedestrians to weave between cars if the crosswalk is impacted. This
decreases their visibility to other travelers.
Please remember this holiday season that all motorists in the city of Greenville are trying to get
somewhere. Being courteous and not blocking intersections will help ensure that we all get to our
destinations safely.
