[ARCHIVED] Body-Worn Camera Policy and Program Implementation

In September 2015, the Greenville Police Department was awarded a $93K federal grant, from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, for the implementation of a body-worn camera program. As part of the program development and requirement of state law, the Police Department will begin drafting a policy govern the use and management of the cameras and video data. The drafting process will include numerous opportunities for public comment and suggestions, which the Police Department believes will help to assure greater awareness of the strengths and limitations of this technology, as well as improve the final policy draft.

With the assistance of Fairway Outdoor Advertising, the Police Department will advertise the program under the slogan “Protect our Citizens and our Cops, Put Cameras on Cops.” The graphic is displayed at the bottom of this media release.

The graphic advertisement will also help direct those who are interested in learning more to a webpage dedicated to the body-worn camera project. The page is linked to our website (http://police.greenvillesc.gov). In it, readers will find GPD policy drafts, examples of BWC policies from other jurisdictions, relevant reference documents, and a form for members of the public to comment with suggestions. A calendar will list when and where community forums and discussions will be held.
