Ballroom dancing is making a comeback and what better way to get introduced to this fun dance than through line dancing. This class is for beginners and focuses on learning ballroom dance steps in formation to a variety of music such as Foxtrot, Tango, Rumba and Cha Cha. No partner necessary.

Do you already know the basics of sewing or have you already completed Beginner Sewing Lessons 101? Then this class is for you! In this class you will learn the basics of home decoration sewing, including how to choose the right fabrics, how to sew mitered corners and learn how to understand commercial patterns. Have you ever wanted to learn how to paint with watercolor or need a refresher course in materials and technique? Join the City of Greenville and Ron Gillen in beginner watercolor painting lessons. Downtown Line Dance is a fun-filled activity that exercises the body and brain at the same time. In 45 minutes, participants learn dance steps for popular social line dances, such as Cupid Shuffle, Electric Slide, Cha Cha Slide, Tush Push, The Wobble and Good Time. Those who wish to go beyond these basic dances may extend their time for an additional hour of instruction in more advanced dances.
Downtown Line Dance is led by Barbara Steele who has taught line dance for 10 years at various venues in Greenville, Simpsonville, Flat Rock and Myrtle Beach. Barbara keeps up with the latest dances by attending national workshops in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina and through her association with World Line Dance and NTA.

In partnership with the Greenville International Folk Dancers, the City of Greenville Parks and Recreation is offering International Folk Dancing on Mondays at the Sears Shelter. Participants may pay per class or for the entire 8-week session by registering online. This session focuses favorite party dances for everyone from a selection of international locales to the best of world music.
Happy Feet Dance Program

Hip Hop 7-12 year olds

This class is offered to ages 7-12 and teaches participants Hip Hop dance moves as well as Jazz techniques. The class is instructed by Sasha Allen and Brooklyn Conrad. Modern jazz dance is frequently influenced by other dance styles, such as hip hop. In turn, hip hop dance is also influenced by jazz dance techniques. This class integrates both dance styles. This dance form develops the student's personal style and creativity in addition to promoting rhythm and coordination. Age appropriate music and movement is used.

Lyrical Dance is a modern form which fuses modern dance, jazz and ballet. Lyrical dance is often referred to as contemporary dance. It requires excellent techniques to perform, as the moves are often difficult and precise. Brandy Johnson is the instructor for our Lyrical Dance class.
Creative Movement I

This class is offered to ages 2-4 and instructed by Ereaka Binns. Creative Movement I is for first time dancers. The participants learn a combination of tap and ballet, as well as the basic Creative Movement moves in level I so that they may progress to level two the following year.

This morning combination class is a great way for students to experience different types of dance in a 45 minute instructional time. Classes are available for students 18 months to 2 years old. The main focus of combination classes is on students having fun and enjoying dance as an everyday activity. Class placement is based on age as well as a student's ability to learn. We are offering a weekly fitness class at the Bobby Pearse Community Center for children who are homeschooled. This 8 week program focuses on instructing youth on the fundamentals of basketball. The first four weeks of the program focuses solely on the basic skills, such as passing, dribbling and shooting. During the last four weeks, the participants continue to practice and learn fundamentals of the sport, but they also play non-competitive games.

The Greenville Lindy Hoppers are an all-volunteer group dedicated to promoting and preserving historic swing era dancing in the Upstate of South Carolina, with an emphasis on Lindy hop and Lindy hop-related styles. This includes dances such as Lindy Charleston, ’20s Charleston, Balboa, East Coast swing, West Coast swing, and blues.

This Piano Program is at the David Hellams Community Center with instructor, Donna Robinson, who has a BS in Music Education from Knoxville College and has been teaching piano for 37 years. We are offering this 10 week Piano program on Monday evenings. The classes are 30 minutes each week and provide one-on-one piano instruction with each participant. There is a piano recital with all participants at the end of the 10-week program. Once registered, participants will be contacted by the instructor to set up a specific 30 minute time between 6 pm and 8 pm on Mondays.

Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in the USA. It is easy to learn and played by persons of all ages but seniors in particular. It provides good exercise, competition, fun, and social interaction. The game is played on a shortened and narrowed tennis court, singles or doubles, with a hard paddle and a plastic, baseball-sized, light-weight whiffle ball. It’s like playing ping-pong on a tennis court. Adults of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend, but we would recommend some paddle-sport experience like tennis, or a bit of coordination and the physical ability to move around on the small court. The program will meet at Gower Park tennis courts and is free to try, and there’s only a quarterly $10 charge for new balls if you continue. Loaner paddles will be provided until you purchase your own. Just come, wear your court shoes, bring your sense of humor, and be prepared for lots of fun.

Did you know that South Carolina’s State Dance is Shag? Come learn how to shag with us! Adam Fisher, who has been teaching shag for many years, is instructing this fun-filled program. This 6-week class meets on Thursdays at 5:30pm – 6:30pm. Then we will have 30 minutes of fun dance practice. All you need are soft sole shoes and a partner!

The City of Greenville Parks and Recreation is registering for the 2013 SEMESTER 2 After-school Study Buddies Program at the following Community Centers:

All students currently enrolled must register for SEMESTER 2. The program is open to students in 5K to 8th grade and will include homework assistance, tutoring, life skills development, recreational activities, snacks/meals and much more.
The fee will be $ 54.00 for SEMESTER 2 - Jan. 2nd – June 6th with city residents getting a 20% discount. There will also discounts for families registering 2 or more kids.
Upsouth Volleyball

Formed in 1981, Upsouth Volleyball and the City of Greenville have provided year round opportunities for adult volleyball
players. The fall and winter indoor seasons take place on Tuesday & Wednesday nights at Greenville Middle Academy off
East North Street. Six player teams compete in an A league on Tuesday nights and a BB League on Wednesday nights.
During the spring and summer we play doubles and triples on the three sand courts next to Greenville Middle.
We also host the Summer Heat Grass Triples tournament every July on the plush grass at the Wenwood Soccer Complex

Members of the W. African Drum & Dance group teach the participants not only how to use the African drums and different types of dances, but they also educate the participants on the equipment and dances by teaching them about the countries and culture from which the instruments and dances originated.

We invite you to join us at the Bobby Pearse Community Center for this 8 week yoga program, which is taught by Brooke Kleinfelter, who is a certified yoga instructor. This 75 minute class is taught once a week, and all levels are welcome; however, you do not need previous yoga experience to enjoy this class. Come ZUMBA with us!! Carmen Kent is a certified instructor who will be teaching ZUMBA this winter. ZUMBA is a Latin-inspired, dance-fitness class that incorporates Latin and International music and dance movements, creating an exciting and effective fitness class. It is a way to get toned, benefit the heart, and burn calories all at the same time. This 6 week ZumbAtomics program is taught by Quisha Owens, who is a licensed Zumba and ZumbAtomics instructor with a Zumba Toning certificate. ZumbAtomics is designed for kids to participate in a rockin', high energy fitness class with specially choreographed kid-friendly routines. Participants may pay $5 per class for city residents or $6 per class for non-residents. Multi-child discounts are available. We do encourage you to register on-line for the entire session!
