KEY Program
In its
efforts to address the root causes of poverty and need in the community, the
Community Development Division partners with the Human Relations Commission
as well as several local residents, officials, employers and agencies to offer
the KEY Program, a Comprehensive Housing Counseling Program.
Increased home ownership is instrumental in successful community revitalization.
The community task force has provided a program that offers an avenue unique to
Greenville in driving up home ownership rates, thus assisting to stabilize
once-neglected neighborhoods.
The program is comprehensive in its approach as it addresses each individual participant’s
needs through utilization of the program network. This approach assists each participant
in removing barriers that diminish their chances of success including issues related
to credit, savings, home maintenance, loan approval and money management.
The program is marketed primarily to those directly impacted by Community Development
activities. The initial purpose of the program is to provide meaningful opportunities
for home ownership to the residents of neighborhoods served by CD revitalization efforts.
The Human Relations Commission of Greenville County, a HUD-designated Housing Counseling
Agency, administers the program. A partnership of over 20 local businesses, lending
institutions, agencies and individuals throughout the community are committed to
addressing the participants individual needs to optimize success – home ownership.
Eligible participants must reside within the City of Greenville and earn less than
80% of the area family median income.
