Main Street Road Closure Information - October 20-24
Southeast U.S. – Japan Association
Main Street, from North Street to Beattie Place, will be closed from 11:30 p.m. on Friday, October 20 to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24 for the Joint Meeting of the Southeast U.S.-Japan Association.
Pavement Work on Main Street
Weather permitting, the contractor that is performing pavement preservation work on numerous streets throughout the city will also treat Main Street (from Beattie Place to Augusta/River Street) this Sunday, October 22. The work will be done overnight and is expected to be complete before the start of the business day on Monday. As a result, parking will not be allowed on that stretch of Main Street between 8 p.m. on Sunday and 5 a.m. on Monday.
The preservation technique being employed is called a rejuvenator and is designed to delay the deterioration of recently paved roadways by protecting the asphalt from damage due to exposure to the elements. Additionally, the product that will be used on Main Street includes titanium dioxide, an air quality component that improves the air by facilitating the oxidation of airborne emissions produced by vehicle exhaust.
While other states have been using rejuvenators for decades, the City is among the first agencies in South Carolina to use it and is the first South Carolina agency to use the titanium dioxide additive to improve air quality.
